If we make the definition of occupational health and safety, which is used extensively in business life, with the abbreviation of OHS. We can say that "they are systematic and scientific studies carried out in order to protect from conditions that may harm health arising from various reasons during the execution of work in the workplace".
Occupational health and safety - OHS phenomenon has started to be dealt with heavily in the European Union since the 1980s. In particular, the Occupational Health and Safety Directive 89/391/EEC issued in 1989 was accepted as a framework directive in the field of occupational health and safety, and then many individual directives were issued based on this framework directive. Occupational Health and Safety Law No. 6331, which entered into force in 2012 in our country, has also entered our lives during the European Union harmonization period.
Purpose of Occupational Health and Safety Studies
Ensuring the Safety of Employees: It constitutes the main purpose of occupational health and safety studies. It is aimed to ensure mental and physical integrity by protecting employees against work accidents and occupational diseases.
Ensuring Production Safety: Ensuring production safety in a workplace is especially important from an economic point of view, as it will result in increased productivity.
Ensuring Operational Safety: With the measures to be taken in the workplace, operational safety will be ensured as the situations that may endanger the business such as machine malfunctions and shutdowns, explosion events, fire, which may arise due to work accidents or an unsafe and unhealthy working environment.
Occupational health and safety in the field of logistics
Occupational health and safety practices in the logistics sector can be implemented more seamlessly by adopting and fulfilling the following activities:
1. To continuously improve the situation regarding occupational health and safety.
2. To continue working on a general prevention policy in workplaces.
3. Determining the hazards with the risk assessment approach at every stage of the work and determining the measures to be taken accordingly.
4. To cooperate with customers and sub-employers working in workplaces regarding occupational health and safety.
5. To inform the employees about the risks that may be encountered in the workplace.
6. To get the opinions of all employees.
7. To have health and safety officers, and health and safety worker representatives in the workplace and to lead their work.
